Penang will play host to the Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference 2020 from 3-6 September. Organised by District Rotaract 3300 Malaysia, it is one of the largest annual Rotaract conferences hosted within the Asia Pacific. Members will share ideas to develop action plans and engage in cultural exchanges.

The event returns to Malaysia for a second time, the last time being in Malacca in 2007. The 600 participants will be coming from 48 countries within the region. According to Ms Melissa Khor Carmen, APRRC 2020 head of marketing and public relations, Penang was chosen as it is a world-renowned tourist destination and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage-listed site. She said: "It has no shortage of cultural sights, natural scenery, and it is also a world-renowned Malaysian food paradise."

Ms Carmen added that the city-state's multi-cultural composition is perfect and the associations hopes participants will help spread the wonders of Penang to their contacts and the publicity will then spur more to travel to Penang and Malaysia.

"Historically, a large number of conference participants choose to extend their stay in the country after the conference. The committee is currently in collaboration with local tour agencies to organise attractive tour packages for the participants," revealed Ms Carmen. She hopes to raise the awareness of the conference among locals, and to let them know that the event is open to paid public participants.

The opening dinner will give participants a taste of the major religious cultural and religious festivals celebrated in Malaysia. Cultural performances will spread over four days. Highlights of the conference will be the sightseeing tour, several community projects planned with the Penang state government and a night savouring local delicacies, hawker-style.
