Pyeongchang is on its way to becoming the blue-eyed boy for South Korea, with the regional government of Gangwon Province expecting more than two million visitors descending upon the county during the upcoming Winter Olympics in February. The boost will help contribute to Korea Tourism Organization's (KTO) target of 20 million international arrivals by 2020. 

"To welcome PyeongChang Olympics, we have improved the country's rail system and various infrastructure so as to boost accessibility for PyeongChang Olympics, tourism and MICE activities. Through MICE activities, we believe that growth in these sectors will be able to help support the development of Gangwon-do and in turn, boost the national brand value of South Korea," says Jung Chang Soo, president, KTO.

Adding to the Olympic buzz is a calendar of activities that the Province is ramping up to generate spin-off tourism interests for leisure and business travellers. "New projects such as 'Hello! 2018 Pyeong Chang', 'Korean cultural story holiday' and 'Visit ahead to the best 10 Pyeongchang tourism road' are also underway to promote tourism in Gangwon-do," adds Jung.

Pyeongchang will set the stage for the opening and closing ceremonies and snow sports, while alpine speed events will be in Jeongseon and ice sports will be in Gangneung. 

Groups may stay at Pyeongchang Alpensia Resort, which comprises hotels from InterContinental Hotel Group: InterContinental Alpensia Pyeongchang Resort (238 rooms), Holiday Inn Resort Alpensia Pyeongchang (214 rooms), and Holiday Inn & Suites Alpensia Pyeongchang (419 rooms).     

The Alpensia Convention Center provides conference facilities for 2,500 guests, offering 14 meeting rooms ranging from 25.5sqm to 480sqm, a 409sqm auditorium and a 11,446sqm Grand Ballroom.

Groups arriving via Seoul will be able to take advantage of a new high-speed train line that takes them to Pyeongchang in 69 minutes.
