Competition is heating up in the MICE industry and meetings planners must be on top of their game to win their pitch. Here are five ways planners and organizers can build their proposals for their next event.

Sell the Destination

Companies are increasingly requesting MICE operators to plan for the meetings in locations that offer unique experiences, from cultural experiences to culinary adventures. With its rich history and colorful heritage, the Philippines is one of the most preferred destinations. In Cebu, for instance, sprawling five-star resorts with large ballrooms and banquet facilities in Mactan Island - such as Movenpick Hotel and Shangri-la Mactan Resort and Spa - are just over the bridge from Parian, the most historic spot in the country's oldest city.

Go for the Thrill

Cruise vacations, adventure sports and immersive travel help create an overall unforgettable experience, and the Philippines has plenty to offer. Events held at Puerto Princesa, for instance, may include a tour of the Subterranean River National Park, a dramatic underground river. In Davao, there are numerous ways to indulge in outdoor fun, from relaxing sailing trips to Samal Island to adrenaline-pumping and unique activities -Skycycling, anyone? - at the Eden Nature Park. On the island of Bohol, several large-capacity hotels and resorts make for a strategic home base for diving or swimming with sea turtles at Balicasag island.

Think Out of the Box

Instead of going for the tried and tested, plan your meetings in cities that offer a different flavor to the usual urban center. Iloilo is a new kid on the block in the MICE industry, and its growth has been rapid. The coastal city has built new roads, multiple spaces for commerce and a modern airport which services regional travelers. Iloilo also has a thriving cycling culture which has resulted in several dedicated bike lanes across the city, adding to the ease of moving around and exploring the destination.

Luxury integrated resorts are often the preferred choice of many planners - these IRs offer expansive and flexible meeting space, as well as world-class food and beverage, while remaining the entertainment leaders of the world. In the Philippines, IRs like City of Dreams and Resorts World Manila quickly come to mind, and many more - including a JG Summit-led IR in Cebu - are forthcoming. Venues adjacent or at least a leisurely stroll from large shopping malls and dining strips, such as all hotels within the Bonifacio Global Area, are likewise ideal.

Aim for Sustainability

There is a growing emphasis on Corporate Social Responsibility in the MICE industry. Davao City is one of the major MICE destinations that balance a wide range of accommodations, resort properties, meeting facilities, shopping malls, and restaurants, along with health and wellness centers that define modern living in a safe and green environment. Here, a growing number of venues actively support local industries - by sourcing supplies from local farms, or hiring from the local community - or advocate for efficient use of energy and water resources.
